For thousands of years, countless nobility and royals have counted emeralds as their favourite gemstone. Till this day, we are still amazed by its beauty. But while you are shopping for emerald jewellery, what should you take note of?
First of all, emeralds are made of the mineral Beryl, and is ranked 7.5 to 8 on Mohs scale. Although not as hard as diamonds, rubies and sapphires, emeralds are still durable and solid. Emeralds are usually found in South America, Central Asia and Africa.
When purchasing emerald jewellery, it is best to note the 4C's, similar to diamonds. The emerald's colour should be evenly spread out, and should be bluish green to pure green. An emerald's colour should not be too dark, but vivid. Its clarity should have few inclusions and blemishes. Eye-clean emeralds are rare because it is common for emeralds to have inclusions. Another consideration is the cut. Each emerald should be symmetric, and each facet should be smooth. Finally, the carat or weight of the emerald would be a consideration for its price. Comparing two emeralds of similar characteristics, the heavier gem would be more valuable.
Another thing to note is whether the emerald is treated to improve its appearance. It is common for oils and waxes to be applied to emeralds to make the cracks and fractures less obvious.
Therefore, when purchasing an expensive set of emerald jewellery, it is best to request for a gem report from a reputable gem laboratory to certify the quality of the emerald.
