Does a diamond's weight or carat affect its price?

Updated: Oct 2, 2024

Carat is one of the 4 C's of diamonds. A carat is 200 milligrams. Or if you go to a jeweller, another way to describe a carat is to divide into 100 points. A 0.5 carat diamond can be described as 50 points. So how does a diamond's carat or weight affect its price? Usually, heavier diamonds are more valuable and expensive, as the larger stone that it was cut from is more rare.

If two diamonds have the same weight or carats, the price will be determined by the other 3 "C"s - clarity, colour and cut.

So when you are buying an engagement ring or diamond jewellery, the price of a diamond would increase exponentially from 1.0 carats onwards. But it is all worth it for a lifetime of love!
