You might come across Aquamarine while looking for Emerald jewellery. But are they the same? And how are they different? Aquamarine is actually a variety of the mineral beryl, which is the same mineral as Emerald. The difference is, Emeralds are mainly green, while Aquamarine exhibits a serene green-blue to blue hue. Often times, heat treatment enhances its bluish appearance. Collectors prize aquamarine crystals for their large size, remarkable clarity, and well-formed structures.
So what should you look out for when selecting aquamarine jewellery? First, the colour of the aquamarine should be light blue, without any dark colouring. Second, the aquamarine should be eye-clean, meaning its clarity should not have any inclusions visible to the naked eye. Third, the cut of the aquamarine should be symmetrical, such that the light reflets evenly from the facets. Lastly, larger and heavier aquamarine with more carats are more valuable, if all else are equal.
If you love blue, or need some inspiration to match your outfit, aquamarine would be a unique choice!
